Tuolumne County's Traffic Fatality Rate is 300 Percent Higher than California's Print E-mail

Sonora, Ca - According to the 2008 Tuolumne County Profile, in our little corner of California, 2005 marked the year that locals' deaths due to vehicle accidents were 300% higher than elsewhere in California. In that same year our injury rate for vehicular accidents was 26% above the state average.

What does this mean? Why would it be so much more dangerous to drive in Tuolumne County? Is it that our main artery, HWY 108, is so much more dangerous? That could be a factor. Head on collisions are common on 108. With only two yellow lines standing in the way of oncoming traffic, maybe Highway 108 is the culprit.

But wait; there are other roads like this in California. So could there be another factor? Probably, but we can only guess. Maybe we have more reckless drivers than the rest of California? Or maybe the problem is travelers and tourists passing through. People up here can often be heard complaining about crazy Bay-area drivers. Well maybe it’s time to look in the mirror. Maybe we’re the crazy drivers.
